I Am Not a Writer, I Am a Gentleman Gardener
It's not that I don't wish to write, it's that I have very little to say. I'm only talking to plants these days, with a trowel and a fork.
But my buddy Jasco recommended Thom Pain (Based on Nothing) by Will Eno, starring James Urbaniak, to all NYCers. Urbaniak's a hell of a stage presence, and that's enough for me.
A minor point: one reader/reviewer at the NYT had this complaint about the show.
At one point, the character says something to the effect of, “Please don't just go home and say that you saw someone being clever.” This was the most telling moment of the evening, because to even include this means the writer is afraid that this entire monologue will be accused of cleverness. He is trying to inoculate himself against the charge by raising it himself, and as a result tips his hand. Someone who had the confidence in his text would never feel the need to include a line like this. The reviewer compares Eno unfavorably with Beckett, and so may I to point out that a similar accusation could be made against Beckett based on this:
VLADIMIR: Moron!
ESTRAGON: That's the idea, let's abuse each other.
They turn, move apart, turn again and face each other.
VLADIMIR: Moron!
ESTRAGON: Vermin!
VLADIMIR: Abortion!
ESTRAGON: Morpion!
VLADIMIR: Sewer-rat!
ESTRAGON: Curate!
VLADIMIR: Cretin!
ESTRAGON: (with finality). Crritic!
VLADIMIR: Oh!
He wilts, vanquished, and turns away. Beckett knew a good meta-gag.
